California Ground Squirrel Otospermophilus beecheyi is a common and easily observed from central Washington, through Western Oregon, Califronia and into the Northern part of Baja California. The squirrel is found in Plains, small meadow, Tree-covered Hillsides, canyons, and Rocky outcrops. It is a large squirrel, with the upper parts mottled a mantle with light gray running from the ears back onto the shoulders, the underside is lighter. The fur around the eyes is whitish, while that around the ears is black. They live in Burrows (And in some cases like the photo they occupay buildings) communally but each individual has his own entrance.
