This is a work in progress. In the next few weeks I will be updating this page with all of the information that I have learned and gathered throughout the years.

Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 VR ED AF-S DX

Summary: The new "kit lens" is without a doubt the best performer in it's class. For those who do not require an aperture of 2.8 this is the lens for you. A lightweight, and very sharp alternative to the much heavier and pricier Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8.

I highly recommend this lens for almost everyone. For those of you who need the fast glass, look elsewhere, for the rest of us, this lens will definitely get the job done.

I recommend this over the 18-55mm (any version), 18-70mm and 18-135mm, of course it's a higher priced lens, but who ever said photography was cheap.

Nikon 60mm f/2.8G AF-S ED

Summary: The 60mm AF-S is the direct replacement to the very popular 60mm f/2.8D. This new version includes an extremely fast (for being a Macro lens) AF-S motor, a Nano Coating which improves it's resistance to glare and probably the best feature, which is the lack of extension at 1:1.

This is a very good replacement to an already excellent lens. The added features make this a much better option than it's older version. This lens is a must if you are into macro photography. It also doubles as a great portrait lens. If you like to shoot bugs or other jittery creatures, than a longer focal length would be the way to go.

Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S

Summary: The new standard for full frame wide angle lenses. The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 is the highest performing lens of it's class It offers an extremely fast AF-S motor and Nano Coating technology with a constant 2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range. It also has unparalleled corner sharpness at 14mm on a full frame camera (21mm on a DX), this is a must have for all pros and serious amateurs who love wide angle.

This lens is highly recommended if you are in need of serious wide angle resolution, great lowlight performance and superior pro build.

My only negative is the inability to use filters.

Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S

Summary: The new Nikon 24-70mm is the direct replacement to the legendary Nikon 28-70mm, aka "THE BEAST". The new version offers Nano Coating technology which helps cut down on flare. This is probably the sharpest zoom lens I have ever used. Sometimes it's too sharp, especially for portraits at 70mm.

I highly recommend this lens if you do not own the 28-70mm, if you do, it might not be worth the upgrade, unless you need the extra glare protection.

On my D300 it's a little too long on the wide end, but on the D3 it's on 95% of the time.

Nikon 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 AF-S ED VR

Summary: There have been three versions of the Nikon 70-300mm. This latest version increases the size, the weight, the price and the performance. I have owned all three versions of this lens, I have never been satisfied with any of them, although the 70-300mm VR is the best one and worth the upgrade for the VR alone.

You really need to test and retest and test again until you find the sweet spot of this lens ( 90-180mm at f/8 on my version) and then you must adhere to those situations to get the best performance.

To me it's just a little too complicated. I like my lenses to just be able to perform. Of course at this price, who can really complain if you need 300mm. If you want a lightweight powerful zoom, with very good build quality and pixel peeping is not in your agenda, than this is the zoom for you. For those who want the best lightweight zoom up to 200mm, get the Nikon 18-200mm VR.

Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DX AF-S

Summary: The Nikon 18-135mm is a very versatile and sharp lens. This lens came bundles when the Nikon D80 was announced. It was the replacement kit lens to the Nikon 18-70mm with the 18-135mm being the sharper lens, and the 18-70 the better built lens.

I really like this lens and I recommend it if you are looking for an inexpensive and light wide to medium telephoto walk around lens. If you need the ultimate walk around lens and price is not an issue, then the Nikon 18-200mm VR wins.

Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S ED DX VR

Summary: There is no doubt in my mind that the ultimate walk around lens is this Nikon 18-200mm VR lens. This is a must for anyone that needs to use a one lens solution. The image quality is above many less powerful, more expensive zooms.

Featuring VRII, AF-S and an 11x zoom make this lens one of Nikon's most useful lenses ever made.
